ABOUT THE CLASSES
- Group classes conducted weekly once with 12 classes in each session.
- Classes are 1 hour and explore concepts through small example programs and simple explanation, with emphasis on learning by doing.
- Homework is assigned weekly, and help is available during the week via email.
- The levels described below typically take one 10-week session each with 60-90 minutes or more of weekly homework.
- Students are welcome to move faster — completing a level in less than 12 weeks by devoting more time to homework each week and using the unlimited email help available during the week.

- A programming language for introducing the basics of computers and programming.
- Clear code style that allows learners to focus on computational thinking, conceptualizing, and problem solving.
- Very popular language with computer science departments in colleges across the country for teaching introductory computer sciences courses.
- Used by some computer science and programming elective courses in local high schools.

Levels of Python at EVComputing

Description of the Levels

Beginner

Prerequisite: Ability to use a browser, basic keyboarding skills.

Objective: Get introduced to programming. Learn about the structure of a program, input/output, variables, data types and operations on them, boolean algebra, conditionals, while loops, random & time modules, built-in lists datatype and its methods.

Projects: Develop an interactive text based game that uses all the concepts learned.

Homework: 60 minutes homework each week.

Grade Level: 5th grade and up.

Advanced Level I

Advanced Level I

Prerequisite: Beginner Level

Objective: Reinforce beginner concepts with practice programs. For loops, advanced lists methods, dictionaries data type, functions and parameters, and string manipulation.

Projects: Develop an interactive game that uses the concepts learnt in this level.

Homework: 90 minutes of homework each week.

Grade Level: 6th grade and up.

Advanced Level II

Advanced Level II

Prerequisite: Advanced Level I

Objective: File input/output, local and global variables, nested for loops, sets, recursion and its efficiency. Completing this level also prepares the student to move to Java.

Projects: Develop a text based game using all the concepts learnt.

Homework: 90 minutes of homework each week.

Grade Level: 6th grade and up.

Projects with Python I, II, III

Prerequisite: Beginner & Advanced Level I, II and having regularly attempted and completed the assigned weekly homework in these levels.

Objective: Students design and implement projects, choosing from a wide selection of open-ended projects based on their interest.

Projects: Examples include sports or other trivia games, quiz programs, password generator, text-based adventure game, tourist information provider, hangman game, twitter bot, and web-scraper. Working on these projects, students explore how computer science relates to their other areas of interest such as language, sports, science, music, math, law and more.

Homework: Two or more hours suggested each week. Beyond a basic structure, the projects are open-ended and based on the student’s interest. In the Python Projects courses, the student is in charge of identifying their weekly homework within their current project and seeking the teacher’s help by email if needed to complete it before the next class.

Grade Level: 6th grade and up.

AI & Machine Learning with Python I, II, III

Prerequisite: Beginner & Advanced Level I, II.

Objective: Start exploring data analysis libraries such as NumPy and pandas using Anaconda. Learn data visualization with Matplotlib/Seaborn for datasets that the students can relate to. Dive into Machine Learning exploring concepts such as linear regression, decision trees, and recommender systems. AI topics such as NLP and chatbots are also covered. Students can expect to work on this course for 2-3 sessions (each 12 weeks long). The course series is roughly divided into three levels, but the actual content of each level is customized based on the student’s interests and the time available for homework.

Projects: There will be quizzes and open-ended mini-projects to provide structure and direction.

Homework: Two or more hours each week is suggested.

Grade Level: Middle & early high school age group. This course series is suitable for students who have an existing interest in the topic, are self-motivated and tend to take charge of their learning — the kind who when coding find it hard to switch off the computer and go to sleep.

Competitions Prep with Python I, II, III

Prerequisite: Advanced Level II. Enrollment in this course is by invitation.

Objective: Students practice and prepare for local and online computing competitions at middle and high school levels by writing Python programs of increasing complexity. The instructor provides guidance for taking part in the competitions, many of which are held online and allow individual participation.

Projects: Examples of the competitions include ACSL, Stanford ProCo, USACO.

Homework: 3-4 hours of assigned homework each week.

Grade Level: 7th grade and up. Some 6th graders may qualify.
